When I think of lives that have been transformed, I think of historical examples like John Newton, a slave trader turned preacher. I also think of people I know. Friends, family, and fellow church members have all impacted my life. God used them to show me what a transformed life should look like. They are all very different from one another: men and women, young and old, rich and poor. But no matter how different they are, there are three things in common that I’ve seen displayed in their lives:
- The Spirit of God
- The Word of God
- The Good News of Jesus Christ
A Life Transformed
I can think of many stories, but I’ll have to stick to one short example. I remember having several conversations with my pastor in the church where I grew up. Often when I brought up a serious issue or question, my pastor would say, “we should pray about that.” And he didn’t mean that in a vague, general sense the way some people do; he meant that we should pray right at that moment. So, we would stop everything else and pray immediately.
Those moments showed me the Spirit of God working in my pastor’s life. Furthermore, the content of his prayer was always filled with Scripture and the gospel. I saw, in good times and in bad, that those three things displayed in his life were having a tremendous effect on me.
These are the things that I’ve seen displayed, over and over again, in transformed lives. And these are exactly what I want to see when I open a textbook designed for my own children. I want to show you how each of these three things are integral to the textbooks we produce at BJU Press.
Foundations
It all starts with prayer. Before anyone at BJU Press draws an outline, makes a plan, or writes a word, we pause. We want to be sure we are doing everything for the right reasons and in the right spirit.
For families considering a secular or Christian curriculum for homeschooling, our blog post Choosing Between Secular and Christian Homeschool Curriculum explains why a Christ‑centered approach matters. Paul reminds us in Galatians 5:25, “If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.” That means everything we do should display the fruit of the Spirit—“love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance” (Gal. 5:22–23).
We don’t just want to display the fruit of the Spirit throughout our textbooks. We also want to emphasize the same message that the Spirit of God speaks to us. John 15:26 says, “But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me.” Since the role of the Spirit is to testify about Jesus, we want to do the exact same thing. That is why the gospel of Jesus is in every textbook and product we have. It is the most essential message, and it is our only hope for salvation.
All this shows that Scripture is not only our guide; it is the foundation of everything we do. We know that God’s truth is the source of all academic subjects. So, you will find Scripture integrated into every subject at every grade level. We believe that training students to develop a biblical worldview is not only a talking point. It should be a core feature of every course of study. So, we place a heavy emphasis on explaining the truth of God’s Word in the context of every-day application.
Committed Staff
When you open a big, thick textbook you may wonder, “How are textbooks made?” If you look at the first few pages of a BJU textbook, you’ll see that it takes quite a large team of people to produce a single student book. Then there are the Activities, Teacher Editions, tests, video courses, and many other parts that round out our curriculum.
Teams of experienced staff members don’t come together by accident. BJU Press hires qualified, Christian staff members who have a commitment to a biblical worldview and a blazing enthusiasm to make an impact for Christ through our textbooks.
Each textbook writer is vetted for both educational qualifications and theological soundness. But writers don’t work in an ivory tower. They have collaborative writing teams that ensure the highest academic standards. Our textbooks undergo intense research and ongoing revision. Our writers ensure that BJU Press textbooks align with state and national standards and use best teaching strategies. This helps them craft age-appropriate content that will challenge your child to grow. Our writers begin by aligning each of our homeschool curriculum with four distinctives: biblical worldview shaping, active learning, critical thinking, and educational technology. Together, these guide how students learn and understand the world. Everything begins with Scripture as the foundation, helping students interpret all subjects—science, history, math, and language arts—through a biblical lens that shapes their understanding of truth and creation. From there, learning moves beyond information through active engagement, where students ask questions, apply concepts, and connect ideas to real life. Critical thinking then equips students to analyze and evaluate ideas wisely, developing discernment rather than memorization alone. Finally, educational technology supports this process with digital tools that enhance engagement while reinforcing biblical integration across every lesson.
Designers and illustrators are the ones who make the textbooks come to life. Among all the academic publishers, the artists at BJU Press are second to none. Even a cursory glance shows that the beautiful charts, maps, and illustrations enhance student engagement and understanding.
Next, our professional editors and proofreaders refine every textbook and product. They ensure the accuracy and clarity of every piece while maintaining consistency across all subjects and grade levels. Like polishing a gemstone, they make sure our textbooks shine and sparkle as they should.
After that, everything goes to our physical printing and digital production specialists. They set everything just right for your child on paper and online.
Our team also designs video courses to give families a fast and easy way to use educational tools online. And the BJU Press Homeschool Hub allows families to easily manage schedules and grades.
And finally, we pack and distribute each textbook with care. Our warehouse is a bustling hive of activity, especially during the summer ordering season. At this very moment, our textbooks are headed out to thousands of students across the globe.
Mission and Impact
Our homeschool curriculum is created by such a wildly diverse group of professionals. And it takes a mission of immense importance to unify them. Here at BJU Press, we don’t seek to create just any kind of educational product or service. We create textbooks that are transformational in the lives of students as they grow in their faith and knowledge of our Savior, Jesus Christ. The people who make textbooks for your child have been transformed by the Spirit of God, the Word of God, and the gospel of Jesus Christ. And that is exactly what we desire for the life of your child.
Not only do our textbooks use the best methods to develop critical thinking and academic excellence. We also write to change the heart, not only the head. Our goal is to make a lasting impact on your children’s lives by teaching them how to love the Lord with all their heart, soul, and mind. Every educational product and service we provide is designed to help your family foster a biblical worldview. Our textbooks lead students through the path of head knowledge to heart change.
Our team takes the incalculable importance of your child’s education to heart. Every stage of textbook development is intentionally designed to transform lives. Visit BJUPresshomeschool.com to view our complete line of materials.
Throughout the year, we have the joy of hearing stories about lives changed by the Spirit of God through the Word of God, proclaiming the Gospel of Jesus Christ. We hope this will be your child’s story as well.
