We all know how important the mastery of math facts is in the lower grades. This year, I have tried using more technology to motivate my students.
In addition to using the web-based XtraMath program, I have all kinds of math apps on our iPads® for practice. One of our new favorites is the Enjoy Learning 9×9 app; it has a few ways to practice multiplication. There are five levels including training, basic, advanced, expert, and challenge. We usually use the basic game, which times students as they complete twenty multiplication problems. The great thing about it is that the students can submit their times to a weekly world ranking. (They just use our classroom number with their student numbers as their “names.”)
Our class has also challenged the principal of our school to compete with us. They do the exercise and record their times, and then the students try to beat their scores. Three days a week I reserve our school iPad lab for the last fifteen minutes of math so that all the students can participate. It’s been a fun motivation for the kids. I even do it and post my time. As a nice bonus, one of my students ranked fifth this week. What a great job!
How do you motivate your students to master math facts? Do you use any fun technology math facts games?
