Each year you realize your class has different strengths and weaknesses. This year our class has really struggled with remembering to put our names and numbers on our papers. We also skip answers here and there which makes it hard for me to grade papers (sigh). And I’ve realized that many times when we do Star Worker, many of the kids don’t even have the chance to win. I had to do something to help those who were struggling, so the Buddy System was born.
I selected four students who had been doing a great job with turning in complete papers. They are our buddies. Before someone turns in a paper, he needs to have it buddy-checked. A buddy will look it over and make sure the other student has included his or her name, number, and a possible answer for every question.
This has been a life saver! It helps me to get complete papers. It helps the students turn in complete papers and stay on Star Worker. It has also motivated other students to want to do better, so that they can be one of the buddies in the future. First Thessalonians 5 tells us to encourage one another, help the weak, and be patient with them all. And the buddy system definitely does that. It’s a win-win situation for everyone!
How do you get your students to put their names on their papers? Do you use certain students to help others in a special way in your classroom? I would love to hear your ideas!
