Twenty-five years ago when I first stepped into my classroom, there was no Praxis™ exam, no interactive whiteboard, no whole brain teaching, and no personal devices. Cell phones, iPads®, Facebook, Twitter, and Pinterest did not exist. If you wanted to connect with someone, you simply had them over for dinner on Saturday night.
I taught for a while and then decided to take some time off when my kids were born. Five years ago, I made the decision to go back to teaching full time. Boy, had my classroom world changed! My grades were no longer calculated with a little paper wheel. I didn’t have to meticulously write them down in the standard red book. Now a computer takes care of all that. Every outlet in my classroom has a power strip attached to it to accommodate all the “new” technology.
But one thing hasn’t changed. Twenty five years ago, I had eighteen little image bearers of Christ walk through my door. They were my responsibility to teach, to empower, to grow, to point to their Creator. This year I have twenty-four image bearers. They are still my responsibility, but they are from a different world than the one I first started teaching in. Join me on my journey as I work on incorporating technology into Classroom 3C this year. If I can do it, any teacher can do it. I think it’s going to be fun. Right now I’m just keeping my head above water, but boy, I sure do love to swim!
